Cardinal Rule

The 2009 Directors’ Cup Final Standings were released a little over a week ago, allowing athletic departments across the country to either brag or cringe about their most recent ranking. First awarded in 1994 (UNC won the inaugural) Stanford has since won the DC for 15 straight years. Anyone who follows college sports will instantly realize just how absurd that streak is; to maintain that consistent manner of athletic excellency across an entire program for one year is tough enough in the current college sports environment – nevermind 15 years. Simply remarkable.

New to the Neighborhood

Oh, hello there, I didn’t see you come in. I’m Walker, the latest addition to CubicleGM (CGM – can I take that liberty, CAPS LOCK?) and the resident college sports aficionado. I’ll admit that unlike my CGM colleagues, I’m rather new to this whole posting on the Internet machine thing; my previous medium of choice [...]

Do I Still Have My Amateur Eligibility?

I remember distinctly when I was in college having a long discussion with several friends about declaring for the NBA draft. We were just 18 years old, and prior to the new eligibility rules, well within the requirements to declare – if only we gave up our amateur status, and thus our college eligibility. While [...]

Basketball in Florida: Six Degrees of Uncle Phil

To round out our tip-to-buzzer college basketball discussion this year (give us a break, NCAA Tournament Media Relations Department, we started in March), I can’t help but put a few words up about this year’s “coaching carousel”. We started by bringing to you very quickly, if not first, the news of Virginia’s new hire, Tony [...]

NCAA Bracket Pools – Final Thought

Last week I wrote two posts around NCAA Bracket Pools.  The former more focused on strategies to use while filling out a bracket, while the latter was about peculiarities of this year’s tournament and the bizarre situation I found myself in.  For those losing sleep on how my bracket played, I can only say Vince [...]

The Collision of Game Theory & NCAA Brackets, part II

In part I of The Collision of Game Theory & NCAA Brackets, Vlookup Vince tossed out some ideas about how Game Theory can be leveraged to gain an advantage in filling out one’s annual NCAA bracket.  Part II digs into the peculiarities of the 2009 tourney, and how Vlookup Vince again faces the opportunity to [...]

The Collision of Game Theory & NCAA Brackets, part 1

When not toiling away with Vlookup Functions and the infamous Index(Match()) combo, Vlookup Vince actually has other interests in life in addition to sports.  Nerdily enough, Game Theory is near the top of that list.  Game Theory tries to capture people’s behaviors using math, and is most often applied to the arena of economics.  Your [...]

The Coaching Carousel Begins: Part I

As teams fall out of the Tournament, the annual coaching carousel begins. Sources confirming (even to CAPS LOCK CARL himself!) that Virginia hires itself a new basketball coach, 39-year old Tony Bennett of Washington State, breaking news at about 5pm on Monday. CAPS LOCK CARL, whilst perusing the web late in the afternoon to waste [...]

NCAA Men’s 1 on 1 Battles (Cont’d)

Editor’s Note: Morning Blend Maurice is not capable of posting his own writings, for various reasons that need not be discussed here.  However, Vlookup Vince promises you that there will not be a follow up piece on the best NCAA Women’s 1 on 1 matchups – that is a guarantee. Cuz I cant stop, won’t [...]

Things Are Looking Up

Just in case you got to work today, convinced it was Friday only to be reminded of your own stupidity, there is some measure of redemption: The NCAA Tournament continues tonight. Yes, it is longer than just one weekend, though that is easy to forget once you get back into your Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday routine.
