After months of off-season trash talk between Lane Kiffin and Urban Meyer, college football pundits and fans alike were predicting a beat down of epic proportions when Tennessee took on Florida in Gainesville this past weekend; the official spread from Vegas was even a large 30 points. Yet the Vols were able to keep it [...]
Big East Preview
Three Best Teams:
Cincinnati: Any one of roughly six teams could (and may) occupy this spot over the course of the season, but Cincy gets the nod for winning the league in 2008.
West Virginia: Life goes on APW (After Pat White) for the Mountaineers, in what will be a telling season for head coach [...]
SEC Preview
Three Best Teams:
Florida: Tim Tebow’s return was obviously huge for the Gators, but it’s their defense – which returns all 11 starters – that will have just as big an impact on Florida’s chances of repeating, if not more.
Ole Miss: Expectations haven’t been this high in Oxford for 40 years and there is no [...]
Pac-10 Preview
First up, the Pac-10:
Three Best Teams:
USC – Not much to be said here – seven straight years with at least a share of the Pac-10 championship and not enough evidence to suggest the streak ends this year. But with new regimes at Washington (operating under former USC OC Steve Sarkisian) and Rick Neuheisel firing up [...]
The Cube Goes Back to College
We here at CubicleGM pride ourselves on being slightly different from your average run-of-the-mill sports blog. So when drawing up plans for a seven part college football preview (focusing on the six BCS affiliated conferences with one post highlighting the mid-majors) it only felt natural to go with a 3-3-5 format, ala West Virginia’s defense.
But [...]
The Media Arms Race In College Football
As conference media days took place across the country the past two weeks, the SEC once again stole the college football spotlight, although not through on-field performance. Rather, by announcing the release of the SEC Digital Network and the creation of the SEC Network, both of which premiere in August. The SEC Digital Network, a [...]
The Spread Offense: “All Your Base Are Belong To Us.”
It’s no secret that in college football over the past decade the spread offense has gone from obscurity to obsession. ESPN.com is reporting that 46 48 of the 120 teams in the FBS ran a spread-based offense or variation last season (at least 75% of the time), or plan to in 2009. Among them are [...]
Cardinal Rule
The 2009 Directors’ Cup Final Standings were released a little over a week ago, allowing athletic departments across the country to either brag or cringe about their most recent ranking. First awarded in 1994 (UNC won the inaugural) Stanford has since won the DC for 15 straight years. Anyone who follows college sports will instantly realize just how absurd that streak is; to maintain that consistent manner of athletic excellency across an entire program for one year is tough enough in the current college sports environment – nevermind 15 years. Simply remarkable.
New to the Neighborhood
Oh, hello there, I didn’t see you come in. I’m Walker, the latest addition to CubicleGM (CGM – can I take that liberty, CAPS LOCK?) and the resident college sports aficionado. I’ll admit that unlike my CGM colleagues, I’m rather new to this whole posting on the Internet machine thing; my previous medium of choice [...]
