BCS Is So Boring

Lets get a few things out of the way:

1.  I finally found my CubicleGM password after losing it for two weeks.  Actually thats not true, just the rumor being spread across the Internets.  I have spent my non-working hours a.) Journeying through The Wire for the second time -  its far better the second time around and b.) Adding ads to our blog.  When those ads are particularly interesting (or the content is) be sure to click on those ads.

2.  I am fully aware that the MLB Winter Meetings are ongoing.  I still haven’t rekindled the fire with my former love, baseball.   That being said, I like yesterday’s Blockbuster 3 team trade involving the Yankees, Tigers, and Diamondbacks and most notably Curtis Granderson.  Granderson is one of the brightest stars of the game in terms of marketability.  He is charismatic, likable, and extremely well spoken.  Patrolling centerfield for the Yankees will only provide him more time in the spotlight, which can only be good for MLB.  However, after getting a few late night txts from MLB, I may be heading down the slippery slope of a full Winter Meeting review.

3.  The BCS.  Let me start by saying I consider myself a casual College Football fan.  I’ll keep an eye on the top 10.  I’ll check in on UVa each week.  I’ll watch a Saturday Night ABC game out at a bar.  I’ll know who is in the running for the Heisman.  That’s about it.  Late Sunday night I take a look at the BCS matchups and the first thought is BORING. The National Title game holds the obvious intrigue that it has come to represent.  Thats a win, love it.  Upstart and undefeated Cincinnati playing Florida in the Sugar Bowl will be interesting as its Tebow’s swan song.  Unless, of course Coach Brian Kelly has already accepted the Notre Dame job, and the team is sans coach.  That doesn’t tend to work out so well.  After that, totally bored, and not in the least bit interested.  Ohio St. and Oregon in the Rose Bowl is mehh.  Obviously this is contractually determined, but that doesn’t hide the fact that it lacks history or rivalry.  Georgia Tech and Iowa in the Orange bowl might be the least hyped or exciting BCS bowl ever.  To round the BCS games out we have the Non-BCS conference squads TCU and Boise St. battling in the Fiesta Bowl.  This might be the most interesting BCS bowl.  Many casual fans haven’t had the chance to see these teams as they do not play on the national stage very often.  However, why play them against each other?  Actually, as TMQ pointed out this week, its because these schools lead to miserable ratings.  However, as a casual fan, I find the David vs. Goliath nature of the Boise St. vs Oklahoma game several years back far more intriguing than the David vs. David matchup presented this year.  Why not let TCU take a crack at Florida (in a game that had the cards fallen correctly could have conceivably been a National Title game) and let Boise St. take a crack at the other unbeaten team, Cincin?  Those matchups give us at least equal ratings (Tebow’s last game still pulls, while Boise St./Cincin can’t do worse than Boise St./TCU) and lets us know how good these smaller schools really are.  Obviously the other piece of this is that the ACC, Big East, SEC, Pac 10, Big 10, and Big 12 don’t want us to know how good these other programs are, as compared to their top teams.  As a result they provide us boring BCS games (let alone the non-BCS games), and miss out on on opportunity to turn one more casual fan into a more loyal fan.  One that is looking for something to fill the void in his life left by MLB.
