Jonathan Sanchez’s Performance Deserves its Own Category

I was in San Francisco on Friday night and had the opportunity to watch the majority of Jonathan Sanchez’s incredible performance against the San Diego Padres.  In throwing the first Giants’ no-hitter in over 32 years, Sanchez struck out 11 and walked none, throwing 77 of his 110 pitches for strikes. Sanchez was putting the [...]

Cardinal Rule

The 2009 Directors’ Cup Final Standings were released a little over a week ago, allowing athletic departments across the country to either brag or cringe about their most recent ranking. First awarded in 1994 (UNC won the inaugural) Stanford has since won the DC for 15 straight years. Anyone who follows college sports will instantly realize just how absurd that streak is; to maintain that consistent manner of athletic excellency across an entire program for one year is tough enough in the current college sports environment – nevermind 15 years. Simply remarkable.

Enjoying the Beauty of Summer Sports

I tend to travel more and pay a little less attention to the sporting world during the summer months. The Summer of Awesome 2009 has been no exception. I’ve traversed to Charlottesville, VA, Cancun, Mexico, Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, DC all in the past 10 weeks for various get-togethers with family and friends, and I’ve enjoyed the hell out of it.

Which makes it just a perfect time for the summer sports of golf and tennis.

Spanning the Spectrum

There’s a perfectly logical reason why Sarah Palin would quit at the beginning of a holiday. You dump news you want no one to care about on the Friday before a long weekend. I know I certainly didn’t. While the governor of the largest state in the US was quitting, I was in the middle [...]

MLB Power Rankings – July 7th

This week’s rankings saw two new entries into the Top 10,  including the Rangers who made the biggest jump, 7 spots from No. 12 to No. 5 in the rankings.  Other notable positive movements included the Cubs, Braves, and the A’s, who all moved up 3 spots.  These movements were more of a result of [...]

Call Me Crazy…but the Cubs Should Consider Trading Jake Fox

The 2009 season for the Chicago Cubs has not gone exactly as planned. Injuries, power outages, suspensions, “lack of fire”, you name it, it’s gone wrong for the Cubs so far this year. One bright spot for the team this season has been midseason call-up Jake Fox. In 23 games over his two stints with [...]

Graphically Speaking

It’s been three days since the US Soccer team lost to Brazil 3-2 in the Confederation Cup finals, and the sports landscape seems to have reverted back to normal. The game added a bit of spice to an otherwise mundane Sunday, but as the end of the game neared Twitter lit up with an out [...]

Nearing the Halfway Point… Some Baseball Musings

Before jumping into my post, please allow me to Re-introduce myself.  As you can see, my byline has changed from Vlookup Vince to Gideon.  Otherwise, though, the Vince I have pretended to be is not all that much different to the Gideon that I am.  I love the business of sports, love viewing sports through [...]
