Great perspective this evening from Sports Illustrated writer Joe Lemire on the necessity of a long-term future for Joe Mauer in Minnesota that helps to continue the rehabilitation of Joes in Minnesota and elsewhere whose names have been tossed around quite a bit over the last six months or so. Lemire pits Mauer’s teammate Justin Morneau together as “baseball’s most underrated duo”; the highly-touted Mauer is not only hitting above .400 but also seems to have found his power stroke since returning from various back and kidney issues lingering through the offseason into the first month of this year.
Beyond that, six homers in 11 games, and as Lemire points out, a hilarious Twitter feed, would appear to make Mauer well deserved of a lucrative long-term extension with the Twins to come in the near future.
