MLB Opening Day: It’s 3pm and…

I’ve been watching ESPN’s MLB Scoreboard for 2+ hours. A few thoughts for your afternoon poo-er:

  1. Good Lord should Cliff Lee be bothering owners right now. The Indians are down 4-0 in Texas, with Lee providing the fastballs resulting in all four earned runs, on six hits, in two innings. K:BB is 1:1. 28 strikes and 20 balls so far. We’ll see how this turns out, but it doesn’t look good so far.
  2. In the same game, who knew, but Kevin Millwood is looking like a Cy Young award winner through nine outs. If he keeps this up he’ll win 30 games. No runs, no hits, one strikeout to date. Don’t anybody talk about it.
  3. Nelson Cruz is 1-for-2. Deep fly out in his first at-bat. Wait four weeks until he’s hitting .240, then trade for him. He’s worth a spot in your outfield, this year and in 2010.
  4. Mets-Reds is an incredible bore to this moment, except for the fact that Johan Santana is reminding everyone that he’s the best pitcher in baseball. Tim who? CC who? 5 Ks, one hit through 4 innings. Only concern are his four walks, but I’d bet that’s just because he’s out there screwing around knowing that there is not enough power in the Reds roster to drive in the guys he puts on, so who cares.
  5. In that same game, Daniel Murphy hits a homer in his third at-bat for the only scoring so far, Brandon Phillips drew a rare walk that is hopefully a sign of things to come, and every time I see Luis Castillo come to the plate I think – holy crap, this guy is still playing? He’s listed at 33 but being from the Dominican could easily be 40.

Still to come before you punch out, starts to the Rockies-Diamondbacks, Yankees-Orioles, Nationals-Marlins, and Pirates-Cardinals, all around 4pm.
